My database records the results of 2,241 games in Tailgater Fantasy Football League history. And that does not include the first season in 1995 as I did not save a copy of those result way back then. So we are easily over 2,300 games played all time, and the Flippin Birds performance in week one was the second highest point total in league history. Only the Scammers week 13 game in 2014 has a higher point total (193.9).

Obviously the Flippin Birds won The defeated the Warriors 179-86. The 92.8 margin of victory is the sixth largest margin of victory in league history. The Birds had eight players in double digits. Caleb Williams led the team with 41 points. That made Caleb Williams the Player of the Week. Williams may be the first POW with painted fingernails. Holy Cow what has our world come to… can you imagine Dick Butkus tacking a player with his fingernails painted. UGH.

Back to the Flippin Birds. Jahmyr Gibbs had 30 and David Montgomery and the Bengals defense added 25 and 20 respectively. That is a heck of a good opening week for the Birds.

The best game of the week saw the Great Dismal Swamp Monsters start the defense of their championship with a hard fought win over the Destroyers 102-101. Now our league isn’t like the NFL. We don’t pamper our defending champion with a mid week home game to open the season. No, the Swamp Monsters were on the road to start the year. Jalen Hurts showed up and scored 30 points. Four other players had ten plush. And it was just enough to hold off a feisty Destroyers team.

Damn, that wasn’t close. That wasn’t even remotely close. We welcomed a new team to the league this week. I’m not sure Damn So Close realized the season was starting. And the Milford Marauders showed no mercy, no hospitality. The Marauders obliterated Damn So Close 138 – 48. Yeah, that’s a ninety point margin… that will be in the record book too. The Marauders got 39 from Josh Allen. D’Andre Swift added 31. Christian Watson had 26 and Justin Jefferson 23.

The Kentucky Moondogs earn the Joe Thiessman Tough Break Award for week one. Their 123 points was the fourth highest total in the league, but wasn’t enough to beat the Renegades who won 128-123. Ashton Jeanty was the leading scorer with 26 points. Four other players were not only in double digits, but they all had 18 or 19 points.

Our league needs a good neighbor policy. Or maybe some neighbors just need to be taught some manners. Unfortunately the Scammers will not get another chance to teach Cincinnati Brown any manners this season after Brown won their only scheduled game 120-85. Lamar Jackson led Brown with 28. Jonathan Taylor had 24 and Zay Flowers added 21. It comes in really handy when you quarterback is throwing touchdowns to one of your receivers.

The last game of the week was the only game that saw a team win with fewer than a hundred points. Multiple Scoregasms clipped the Oky Ducks 93-73. The Ducks are coming off an auto draft, which kind of has them starting from behind. Scoregasms got 34 from Derrick Henry. He was the only Scoregasms to score more than twenty points.

SURVIVOR
Well I hate to do this in a guys first game, but when you only score 48 points, you make it kinda difficult for me to keep you on the island. Damn So Close is Damn So Soon on the Survivor game, eliminated in week one.

GAME OF THE WEEK
OK, I’ll bite. The dichotomy between these teams is just too much to pass up. The Flippin Birds are coming off the second best game ever. Damn So Close is coming off one of the worst games in recent league history. I did look, he did not make the bottom ten all time games, so that is good.

Caleb Williams will lead the Flippin Birds again this week. He will have Jaymir Gibbs at running back. Damn So Close will have to pick between Bo Nix and Jared Goff. James Cook is a solid option at running back for So Close.

Let’s hope Damn So Close can keep this respectable.
